Microwave Transmission Measurement

Endress+Hauser’s microwave transmission measurement portfolio delivers inline, real‑time determination of total solids (TS) in aqueous mixtures, most notably wastewater sludge. A microwave signal is sent through the medium; changes in time‑of‑flight and attenuation reveal the mixture’s permittivity, from which TS is derived. The portfolio centers on two Proline Teqwave meters: the MW 300 with a compact, easily accessible transmitter and the MW 500 with a remote transmitter for challenging installations. Both are specified for 0–50% TS (0–500 g/L) and typical process ratings up to PN 16 / Class 150 / 10K, and the method is inherently independent of color and turbidity.

Designed for permanent process control, Teqwave MW instruments provide continuous TS values that operators can use for feed‑forward/feedback control of clarifiers, thickeners, digesters, and dewatering equipment. They are low-maintenance and time-saving by design, with a polished measuring tube to limit buildup and extend cleaning intervals. Multivariable capability (TS, temperature, conductivity), onboard web server with optional WLAN, and in‑process verification via Heartbeat Technology simplify operation and compliance. For integration, standard plant communications are available, HART, Modbus RS‑485, analog 4–20 mA, plus an Ethernet web server, and MW 500 offers up to four freely combinable I/Os for flexibility.

Typical applications span primary clarification, anaerobic digestion, and dewatering lines in municipal and industrial plants; continuous inline TS measurement displaces delayed lab sampling and provides immediate visibility to solids balance. Beyond wastewater, microwave transmission meters are deployed anywhere TS drives quality or efficiency, including segments of food & beverage and pulp & paper. Strategic meter placement on sludge feed or return lines, upstream of centrifuges and belt presses, or after thickeners, helps stabilize polymer addition and residence time, supports energy‑efficient operation, and reduces unplanned upsets.
