Extended Thermowells
Thermowells are the process-wetted protective components of a temperature assembly, forming a robust barrier between the process conditions and the temperature insert. They protect the sensing element from mechanical stress, high pressure, high-velocity flow, and aggressive or corrosive media.
A central advantage is serviceability: the temperature insert can typically be removed and replaced without opening the process, enabling maintenance, recalibration, or sensor replacement while preserving containment. This is particularly important in hazardous, high-pressure, or high-temperature services where downtime and exposure must be minimized.
Thermowell selection is influenced by design type (such as welded, barstock, or forged constructions), manufacturing approach, and applicable industry standards and certification requirements. Connection styles span industrial and hygienic interfaces—threaded, flanged, weld-in, socket weld, compression, clamp, and more—supporting harmonization with plant piping standards.
Materials selection is critical and ranges from stainless steels to higher alloys and ceramics depending on corrosion, erosion, temperature, and mechanical load conditions. Geometry choices (including extension neck options) support thermal isolation from ambient effects and compatibility with insulation or accessibility constraints.
Typical applications include any intrusive temperature measurement where process conditions would otherwise damage the sensor or where safe, non-intrusive maintenance is required. Selection is guided by process pressure and velocity, corrosion/erosion risk, required immersion and insertion length, governing standards, and the balance between mechanical strength and response time.
