Turbidity Sensors and Transmitters
Endress+Hauser’s turbidity portfolio covers inline optics for measuring turbidity and total suspended solids (TSS) from ultra‑clear water to heavy mixed liquor. It combines multiple optical principles, ISO 7027 nephelometry, backscatter, absorption, and forward scatter, with the Memosens digital interface and Liquiline transmitters to deliver stable, audit‑ready values in utilities, wastewater, food & beverage, chemicals, and power. The result is fewer grab samples, faster control loops, and higher plant availability.
Turbimax CUS52D is the hygienic, low‑turbidity workhorse for drinking and process water. It measures by 90° light scatter per ISO 7027 at 860 nm, can be clamped directly into pipelines, and fits Flowfit CUA252/CUA262 flow cells. A lab‑traceable solid‑state reference (CUY52) enables quick verification; detection limits down to ~0.0015 FNU support post‑filtration and distribution monitoring. Memosens ensures plug‑and‑play exchange and moisture‑immune signal integrity.
Turbimax CUS51D addresses wastewater and utilities from effluent clarity to mixed‑liquor solids. Its dual‑channel, four‑beam pulsed‑light optics combine 90° and 135° receivers to cover low, medium, and high ranges with built‑in application models (e.g., activated sludge, thin sludge). Typical spans reach 0–4,000 FNU and, depending on medium, up to ~300 g/L solids; installation with Flexdip immersion or Cleanfit retractable assemblies is straightforward. Optional air cleaning extends uptime at fouling points.
For industrial wastewater and dark media, Turbimax CUS50D uses near‑IR absorption (Lambert–Beer) with 5/10 mm path lengths to quantify turbidity or TSS where scattering methods plateau. A dirt‑repellent sensor head and single‑point calibration support unattended operation in sludges, polymer dosing, and pigment slurries (e.g., TiO₂). Complete measuring points pair CUS50D with Liquiline CM44x and, where needed, Flowfit flow cells or retractable hardware.
Where the earliest indication of haze matters, the OUSTF10 forward‑scatter sensor detects minute particle concentrations for filter breakthrough, condensate and heat‑exchanger leak detection, and brine/brewery monitoring. It is designed for high temperatures, CIP/SIP and hazardous areas (ATEX/FM) and can be implemented with dedicated inline/flow assemblies. Its small‑angle scattered‑light geometry excels at very low turbidity levels while remaining robust in process conditions.
For multi‑parameter optical monitoring, the Memosens Wave CAS80E UV‑VIS spectrometer measures turbidity/TSS alongside SAC254, nitrate, and CODeq/BODeq/TOCeq, chemical‑free and in real time. It’s valuable where operators want one sensor to watch both organics and clarity, and it integrates natively via Memosens. CAS80E extends the turbidity toolbox beyond single‑wavelength methods when broader context or early‑warning indices are needed.
Liquiline transmitters, CM442/CM444/CM448/CM44R and CM44P, unify setup, diagnostics, and integration for all of the above. They support multi‑channel architectures, Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus and HART, an integrated web server, and Heartbeat Technology for standardized diagnostics and verification reporting, useful for compliance documentation and status‑oriented maintenance.
Engineering is practical with purpose‑built assemblies. Flowfit CUA252/CUA262 minimize backscatter and simplify venting for low‑turbidity points; Flexdip immersion and Cleanfit retractable hardware simplify basin and in‑pipe service, and the CYR52 ultrasonic cleaner combats bubble and fouling effects in flow cells, extending cleaning intervals. These accessories shorten commissioning and stabilize measurement under real‑world hydraulics.
Typical applications: final turbidity and filter control in waterworks; membrane integrity and distribution monitoring; aeration, return/activated sludge, and effluent clarity in wastewater; and process purity checks such as condensate and heat‑exchanger leak detection in utilities or early haze detection in breweries. Selecting the optical principle by duty, CUS52D for low FNU, CUS51D for mixed liquor and effluent, CUS50D for dark/high‑solids media, OUSTF10 for trace haze, or CAS80E for multi‑parameter optics, yields robust control signals with minimal upkeep.
